A woman has been fined £300 for running an unlicensed dog breeding establishment at Llangolman, in a prosecution brought by Pembrokeshire County Council’s Animal Health and Welfare team.
Margaret Barton, who appeared before Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Monday (16th October), pleaded guilty to the offence.
Magistrates also ordered the defendant to pay £275 costs.
The court was told that on 2nd March 2006, a visit by way of inspection under warrant was carried out at Bryncleddau, Llangolman, Clynderwen, by two Animal Welfare Inspectors and a Veterinary Surgeon.
The premises were not licensed by Pembrokeshire County Council at the time.
On arrival 47 canines were discovered in total. There were 33 bitches seen which were eligible for breeding. and four litters of puppies were present consisting of 18 pups. The defendant admitted to breeding from 18 of the bitches in the past.
While the Veterinary Surgeon was satisfied that there were no welfare problems and that the dogs were in good health, he did indicate that the housing conditions and exercise areas were inadequate.
The Council would not have licensed dogs kept in such conditions.
When interviewed, the defendant admitted breeding dogs for the purpose of sale to dealers and not keeping proper records of sales.
